 Mayor Lies, Taxes Rise
Melchiondo and Cirulli Claim Tax Hikes = Zero?
After giving the people of Barnegat Municipal tax hikes in 2007 and 2008 while they "promised" stable taxes, what would Committeemen Melchiondo and Cirulli say in their re-election material? Incredibly, they lie. They don't simply try to mislead, like what has become expected from politicians these days, they lie in big red letters..."ZERO MUNICIPAL TAX INCREASE IN 4 OUT OF 5 YEARS!" This desperate attempt to change reality should send Barnegat voters to the polls in revolt this year. The following are facts. Remember - this is not opinion - these are FACTS that you can verify by simply looking at your tax bill. Or, by reading the direct quotes from the Republican-elected officials responsible for these tax hikes. Click here >> to read full story.

Sundays At Summerville
Local Performing Arts School Entertaining Residents for 6 Years
Six years ago, pianist and instructor Joe Valmonte started entertaining the residents at Summerville Assisted Living the 1st Sunday of every month. Over the years, Joe started bringing in his piano students during these performances, offering them the opportunity to practice playing in front of an audience. Today, these Sunday performances have grown to include all students of the Valmonte Center for Performing Arts - piano players, singers, group vocal ensembles, guitarists and more. In fact they just celebrated their 6th anniversary of "Summerville Sundays" in May. The residents at Summerville are always delighted to have these talented youngsters come to play and sing for them, and enjoy watching the kids grow and develop their talents over time. Joe Valmonte and The Valmonte Center for Performing Arts provides a wonderful service to these members of our community, as well as the students who perform. Way to go, Joe!
Happy Heritage Day, Barnegat
Barnegat's 7th Annual Heritage Day will be this Saturday, June 6th. Again, we will not be allowed to celebrate all that is good in Barnegat. There will be no activities planned to express Barnegat's pride and heritage, there will be no cultural events, and the children will not be enjoying their unique culture that makes them who they are. There will be absolutely no activity in the downtown area yet again, and that is a shame. Click here >> to read the full story.
Barnegat Chamber of Commerce Places Local Business "Under Investigation"?
Who Should Really Be Investigated?
EDITOR'S NOTE: Without investigative journalism in our local press, the potential conflict of interest between the Barnegat Chamber of Commerce and the Twp. Committee escalates according to this letter from a local businesswoman. Again, in all fairness, we would be happy to post any response from the Barnegat Chamber of Commerce, or the Twp. Committee.
Good Morning. This is Dee from Dee'z Dirty water Dogz. I just left the monthly COC meeting which I found to be extremely enlightening!!! I asked how long after applying by application to the Chamber does the business show up on the web site. I was told "after being accepted" it may take a couple weeks and my business was still "under investigation". When asked about the "rules of joining the Chamber" I was told there are no rules they "make them up as they go along". When asked by whom I was told the "board". Another business owner came forward and said that in his many years of working with the Chamber, including as an officer, NO OTHER BUSINESS HAS EVER BEEN TURNED AWAY!! If you are a business you are accepted!! Click here >> to read her full letter to the media.
Conflict of Interest?
Reader Claims Chamber of Commerce/Twp. Committee Plays Dirty With Local Business
EDITOR'S NOTE: The following is an email DowntownBarnegat.com received for publication regarding the Chamber of Commerce and their controversial relationship with the Twp. Committee, and the struggle of a local hero trying to earn a living. DowntownBarnegat.com would be happy to post any response from Chamber of Commerce.
This is an email I sent to the Jersey Guys on 101.5 after they featured Dee'z on their program as a result of the recent "media frenzy" concerning her Hot Dog Truck. I would hope that you could publish this so the people of Barnegat are as proud to have Dee and Dee'z a part of Barnegat History as I am.

Local 9/11 Responder Case Continues
EDITOR'S NOTE: DowntownBarnegat.com received this letter from Barnegat resident Charles Giles.
Dear Friends, I am writing this letter to you in regards to my 9/11 case. As you have all been supporting me through the last 1 1/2 years my family has been extremly humbled. About 3 weeks ago I won my case after 7 1/2 years. I would have been awarded a little over $35,000 plus bi-weekly payments for the rest of my life whatever that may be. Once again a 9/11 First Responder has gotten screwed. Click here >> to read Mr. Giles' complete letter.

SPECIAL EDITORIAL:
Hartman Abandons Ship
DowntownBarnegat.com says Farewell
As the new year starts for the people of Barnegat, Committeeman Thomas Hartman walks out on elected office leaving generations to feel the pain of his time served. Hartman lied to the people of Barnegat and the local press regarding the township killing Barnegat's only day of town pride, by the people and for the people, Heritage Day. Sadly this was only the tip of the iceberg as the SS Barnegat -- much like the Titanic -- sails through dangerous water. Click here for the full edtorial.

Christmas Party to Benefit Children of 9/11 Responders
The FealGood Foundation is a 501c3 charity organization created to help those heroic men and women who suffer from the after math of that devastating day and from their heroic actions. Their sole priority was to aid NY & America in a time of need, and show the true spirit of American resolve. Yet many of 9/11 responders have not yet received the compensation they so deserve from our Federal Government. With the holidays approaching fast, many will not be able to put toys under the trees for their children. Let alone these amazing individuals can not pay their medical bills, their mortgages, and even put gas in their cars to go to their doctors. The Fealgood Foundation is holding a Christmas Party on Sat. December 20th so that the children of these forgotten heros have a Christmas. They are asking their friends and neighbors to donate a New Toy or two for these kids. A drive in Barnegat's Middle School & High School has begun which will coincide with other drives they are holding. These gifts would go to children of New jersey responders as well as New York Responders. Their childrens' ages range from 6 months to 18 yrs. of age. Male & female. You can drop off your unwrapped toy or toys now until Saturday December 13th at Tobacco Road next to the Masonic Lodge on East Bay Avenue. If you do not wish to buy a toy but make a donation checks can be made out to The Fealgood Foundation and they will go out to purchase the toys. If you are interested in assisiting with this most charitable cause, please email Charles Giles, or you can call him at 609-271-4936. This is a tax deductible donation since the charity is a 501c3 organization. All donations are needed by December 13, 2008. It's Official, Matthews Loses!
Record Number of Readers Make a Difference
With the provisional ballots counted, Len Morano was officially re-elected to the Barnegat Twp. Committee. H. Kenneth Matthews came up only 45 votes short while every other Republican dominated in the local region, on the back of the strong turn-out of the Presidential race. One important factor that won't be reported in the local press is the fact that Matthews, along with winning Candidate Marty Lisella, refused to answer DowntownBarnegat.com's Candidates' Forum '08 questions. The failure of Matthews responsiveness could be what cost him the election. Click here for the full story.

So what does every Republican member of the Twp. Committee do for us??? That's right...they raise the TWP. TAX 5.3 % , that is on top of the 8.6 % hike they hit us with last year! Citizen Calls For Help For 9/11 Responders
EDITOR'S NOTE: The following was sent by Charles Giles - Asst. Director to the V.P. at The Fealgood Foundation & Barnegat resident.
Dear Friends,
John Feal & I were in Washington DC on Saturday. We were advised Friday afternoon that HR6594 was being voted on & our attendance was requested. After the long drive Friday night Saturday morning we went to the Congressional offices ready for the day that every 9/11 responder has been waiting for. Well guess what. The bill did not go to the floor & has been changed again to HR 7174 The James Zadroga Health & Compensation act of 2008. There is a strong possibility that it now will go to the floor today or early tomorrow. I emplore all of you to please call Nancy Pelosi's office, number is listed in the Press Release (attached) & tell her to put it on the floor. We have a 60/40 shot of getting this done but we need everyone to call her as soon as you get this email. Just emplore her to send the new 9/11 Bill HR7174 to the floor for a vote ASAP. I am asking you especially everyone political to make this call right now. Thank You & May God Bless You All. Please Read the (attached) release. Once again Thanks!
Sincerely, Charles J. Giles
A Thank You Note from Jamie Griffin
EDITOR'S NOTE: The following is a letter sent to DowntownBarnegat.com by citizen Jamie Griffin concerning the final outcome of the prosposed cell tower on Lower Shore Road.
I just caught sight of a rosy autumn sunset over Old Lower Shore Road and was again struck by how grateful I am to Barnegat's Zoning Board for voting to preserve it. It was clear on Tuesday, September 9 that our Zoning Board is committed to steering clear of politics and public opinion. For many months they listened to experts on both sides of the issue. Then they listened to the citizens they represent and ruled in what they felt was our town's best interest. Even Maria Capriotti, who was singled out in newspaper reports as casting one of only two votes in favor of Cingular's application, clearly takes her position to heart and had agonized over her decision before casting the vote that she truly felt was in the best interest of her fellow citizens. We cannot ask for more. Click here for her full letter.
Cell Tower Denied The People of Barnegat win
The dedicated volunteers who make up the Zoning Board in Barnegat voted for ALL of us, as a majority of them said NO to the placement of a cell tower on Lower Shore Road. Small town values of caring for your neighbor, preserving our historic areas, thinking about future generations, and good old common sense are alive and well in Barnegat. Click here for the full story.
Attend the Zoning Board meeting on Tuesday, 9/9 regarding the proposed Lower Shore Road Cell Tower
"We've listened to 'expert' opinions, hired by Cingular, for long enough. Now it's time to hear what the people of Barnegat think!"
EDITOR'S NOTE: The following is a letter from resident Jamie Griffin urging everyone to attend the Zoning Board meeting on Tuesday, 9/9 when the proposed Lower Shore Road cell tower issue reconvenes.
Thank you for hanging in there with us these past 18 months as we've tried to dissuade the Zoning Board from letting Cingular destroy one of the last untouched corners of beautiful old Barnegat. Click here for the full story.
VOLUNTEERISM IN ACTION
"NIMBLE FINGERS GROUP" making a difference in our community...and world
By Elaine V. Flynn
It's always inspiring to hear about those people who never seem to slow down even after retirement. Maybe the word "retire" is not appropriate in this day and age any more. Every Tuesday morning, members of the Nimble Fingers Group of the adult community (an offshoot of the Mirage Women's Club
Four Seasons at Mirage, Barnegat), gather together to knit and/or crochet items for charitable not-for-profit organizations. Their latest venture was an initial goal of 50 afghans for female and male amputee veterans to provide some measure of comfort and protection as they recover from their wounds in a VA hospital. HARTMAN UPDATE: The Press of Atlantic City reports "Hartman cited health reasons for his decision to withdraw from the race, having recently had skin cancer removed from his nose and received advice from his doctor to reduce his stress levels, he said."
HARTMAN QUITS!!
Controversial Committeeman runs away from re-election
Stating personal health reasons, the man who took the lead for his fellow Republicans in trying to kill Barnegat's Heritage Day is calling it quits at the end of the year. Instead of facing what looked like a sure defeat in November at the hands of the voters, Thomas Hartman will instead step aside. Continuing to uphold the current GOP-led Committee's position of unaccountability to the people of Barnegat, Hartman will not stand on his record, but will instead just simply walk away. Hartman's quitting is no surprise to many residents. The big question is -- why at this time?

An update from Committeewoman Ryan
Thoughts after 6 months of serving the residents of Barnegat!
It has been a challenging 6 months with much to learn! I have been very busy
with many meetings of various groups. At all times I try to keep the best interests of the citizens of Barnegat uppermost in my mind. Several bond ordinances providing for various water and sewer projects and cameras, computers and G.P.S. systems for our police department have been passed. All of these projects are of benefit to the residents of Barnegat and they have not increased our debt service since the funding came from previous bonding that had remaining funds. Click here for Committewoman Ryan's full comment.
Attend the final meeting regarding the proposed Lower Shore Rd. Cell Tower
EDITOR'S NOTE: The following is a letter from resident Jamie Griffin urging everyone to attend the final meeting on the proposed cell tower on Lower Shore Road...it is sure to be interesting.
Cingular's Application to put a 162' cell tower on the corner of Lower Shore and Old Lower Shore Roads will conclude on Tuesday, July 8th at 7:30 in the Township Municipal Building. Many citizens attended the Special Cell Tower Meeting on March 31st to give their opinions concerning this matter, but were disappointed when, by the end of the meeting, Cingular had not yet concluded their case. Story with Comments about Hartman Killing Heritage Day Taken Off APP.com Site
For some reason a little story posted by the Barnegat Chamber of Commerce looking for vendors for its controversial Community Day Merchant's Mart was removed from the APP.com website. This was most likely an accident since stories in the "Your Voices Get Published" section are left on the site for an extended period of time. The comments associated with this story should be very interesting to our readers or anyone concerned with Truth in Government. 1st Barnegat High School Graduating Class Should Be Honored
Hartman Says NO! He Won't Support Our Community
The 1st graduating class of Barnegat High School deserves to be honored as "Timekeepers Of The Year" at Barnegat's Heritage Day, this Saturday June 7th. Sadly these great kids will not receive any public recognition at Barnegat's only day of true town pride. No, once again we will have no activities because Committeeman Thomas Hartman -- in collusion with the Barnegat Chamber of Commerce -- despicably pulled support for this annual celebration of Barnegat's heritage.
Heritage Day started with the dedication of the town clock in 2003. Just like the beautiful town clock, Heritage Day is funded by volunteers -- not the taxpayer. Amazingly, people love Barnegat so much, they spend their own time & money to celebrate their heritage and show town pride on the 1st Saturday of June each year. At our 1st Heritage Day, one of our volunteers had a great idea. She wanted to take a picture of the 1st graduating class of our new high school. All the children, who were at the time attending Brackman Middle School, posed for a group shot. The picture -- along with other items -- was placed in a time capsule, buried at the base of the clock. The time capsule will be opened on Heritage Day in 2046 -- when Barnegat celebrates its 200th anniversary. Click here to read the full story.
Lower Shore Rd. Cell Tower Update
EDITOR'S NOTE: The following is a letter from resident Jamie Griffin about the results from the Barnegat Zoning Board Meeting May 13th, regarding the prososed cell tower on Lower Shore Road.
We actually had a pretty good meeting last night. This time, the board allowed us to enter into evidence some photos depicting the difference between the large (150') setback of the Verizon Tower on West Bay Ave. and the tiny (15') setback of the Cingular Tower on the proposed lot, to demonstrate the fact that there would be no room for screening. Waste of Public Funds At Its Worst!
Perfectly good sidewalks ripped up & replaced
For many years, residents have demanded that a small dirt path used as a sidewalk Downtown be paved. When reported in the local newspaper that citizens wanted that unsafe condition - along with our crumbling roads - repaired, the Mayor of Barnegat at the time (Al Cirulli) attacked the citizen making the request. Now the people have won and have forced an unresponsive Twp. Committee to finally make necessary improvements. But wait! Pork barrel spending at its worst hits Downtown Barnegat. In front of some properties sidewalks were unnecessarily replaced when all that was needed was putting in sidewalks where there were none. Will the taxpayers of Barnegat be taken advantage of once again? Click here for full story.

APP - We Want ET!
Hartman/Novrit Scandal Comments Censored
The Asbury Park Press website - APP.com - has taken down ET's Barnegat Blog stating "This community member's page is currently being reviewed by the editors." After a posting on the ET blog discussing the Hartman/Novrit Scandal, that particular posting was quickly taken off the APP.com website. Then shortly after another ET post about accountability for an officially un-reported case of MRSA in the Barnegat School District, ET's entire blog was taken down. This is censorship of the worst kind by an organization that should know better -- The Asbury Park Press. The people of Barnegat have the right to hear what our fellow residents have to say. The APP should be a defender of First Ammendment Rights, and let all viewpoints be heard. Click here to read the full story.
Hartman's Running-mate Novrit Sent to Jail
Investigation of wrong-doing in Barnegat called for
Republican Committeeman Thomas Hartman's running mate in 2002 - Virginia Rose Novrit - was sentenced to 3 years and 5 months in Federal prison for her part in a mortgage fraud scheme in Georgia and South Carolina. Democratic Committeeman Len Morano is calling for a full investigation to look into any possible financial wrong-doing while Novrit was in office in Barnegat. When the Hartman/Novrit team won election in 2002, the Barnegat Committee became controlled by the Republican Party that still controls it today. Novrit's conviction raises additional questions about a Committee involved in scandal and controvery while public trust slips away. Click here to read the full story.

Mirage Women's Club Gives Back To The Community
Many groups in Barnegat do not get the full recognition they deserve. One of these groups is the Women's Club at the Mirage. This group of women is active throughout our community and give back in many ways. From supporting hunger programs sponsored by St. Mary's Church to supporting the performing arts which are so important to our children, the Women's Club at the Mirage is there. It's through their generosity and hard work that our community gets a little better every day. Click here for full story & photo gallery.
New School Board Members Take Control
Change Gaining Momentum In Barnegat
Lisa Becker, Denise Pilovsky, Kevin Scully, Lauren Sarno & Rafael Adorno were all sworn in as Board Members of the Barnegat School District during a packed Board of Education meeting this Monday night. The people of Barnegat want change and they're starting to get it. This past November, controversial Committeeman J.J. Novak was soundly defeated by Dorothy Ryan, and now all 5 challengers for this April's B.O.E. were swept into office. The people of Barnegat are demanding leaders who are accountable, fiscally sound, and respectful to the people they serve. Positive change has started, and we all have much to be proud of. Committeewoman Ryan Speaks To Our Readers
Straight Talk About Watts Park
It has been some time now since I have written to readers of DowntownBarnegat.com and there has been a great deal of discussion about the Rose Hill Park and should we bond or should we not. Let me say that I believe the park to be a great asset to our entire town. I have struggled with the issue of bonding at this time and voted my conscience on at the Township Committee meeting on Monday when I said "no" to bonding. All of you are aware of the serious economic issues not only here in Barnegat but in the entire country. The more I read and learned of rising prices, declining home sales, foreclosures, no market for bonds, and all the many other issues in our world today - the more concerned I became about adding additional debt to our Township budget. I wrote the following message for the March 10th meeting at the high school and never did read it so I thought I would forward it to DowntownBarnegat.com. I took an oath of office on January 1, 2008 that included being fiscally responsible and I believe my decision upheld that oath. There will be a referendum question on the ballot in November when all voters will have an opportunity voice there opinions for or against bonding for Rose Hill Park.

Citizen Calls For Pride in Barnegat
Barnegat has been making the news lately and for all of the wrong reasons. We all must be aware by now of the horrific discovery at 21 Potomac Court. For reasons unknown, the abandoned townhouse contained the decomposed bodies of at least 50 long-dead animals, abandoned and left without food or water. This act is certainly cruel and unthinkable to any decent person.
I noticed when my neighbor starting walking just one of her dog's instead of two, I feared that the other dog might have passed away. I asked her when I had occasion to speak with her and she mentioned that her "other dog was getting too old for long walks." I was relieved. Do you think the fate of those poor defenseless animals would have been different if the neighbor's of this townhouse asked a few questions and made a few phone calls?

SPECIAL EDITORIAL
Barnegat, not the Best Place to live any more - according to NJ Monthly Magazine
Bad leadership sinks Barnegat in the ratings
Two years ago the people of Barnegat were told to vote for the current Republican-controlled Committee because NJ Monthly Magazine named Barnegat "The Best Place To Live In Ocean County". The current March 2008 issue of NJ Monthly Magazine has come out, and the results are in. Barnegat is number 270, of the 566 municipalities in New Jersey. Barnegat plummeted down 13 spots in Ocean County alone. Who is responsible for this failure? How could Barnegat have gotten so bad, so fast? One needs to look at the people who took credit for our ranking in the first place...the Twp. Committee.

Citizen Calls For Fairness on Twp. Website
EDITOR'S NOTE:The following letter was sent to DowntownBarnegat.com. Every Twp. Committee member is invited to post any communication here, on this website. Not only is this website a non-partisan, professional site serving our community for the past 5 years, but it would cost the Barnegat taxpayers not one penny if the Committee uses this valuable resource. Also it would provide unedited input and rebuttal from the citizens of Barnegat.
Dear Committee Members Ryan and Morano:
It is my belief that the inclusion of a "Mayor's Report" on the Barnegat Township website is an objective manifestation of partisan politics at the expense of the taxpayers who fund the operation of the website. I believe that this report should be stricken from the site unless an opportunity is afforded for a dissenting opinion and/or rebuttal by a member of an opposing party to best inform the public and insure a level playing field.

Lower Shore Road Cell Tower Update
EDITOR'S NOTE: The following letter was sent to DowntownBarnegat.com with the request to show the artist's rendering of the proposed tower.
Thanks to everyone who was able to make it to the meeting. Another grueling night with the issue to be carried to yet another meeting on May 13th. It was tough going, but I'm hoping that our engineer was able to get through on some of his points concerning the inappropriateness of the proposed site. We're concerned that even the Zoning Board doesn't realize just how unsafe and intrusive this cell monopole would be so close to the road on the proposed site. And we're concerned that they don't realize that there absolutely are alternative and more appropriate sites available!

"An Affair To Remember"
Our Gang's 4th Annual Event Was Truly Memorable
A talented group of performers from Our Gang Players presented two shows this Sunday at Uncle Will's Grill in Beach Haven. The performers ranged in ages from 8 to over 70, and sang a variety of songs -- including Elmer Fawcett (pictured left) who sang the old classics "Softly As I Leave You", and "One For My Baby". Both shows were terrific, as was the delicious food prepared by Tom & Margie Stewart of Uncle Will's Grill - open for breakfast daily, and dinner Friday through Sunday.
Upcoming Our Gang Players' events include a show at the Mirage Community in Barnegat in April, "Li'l Abner at STAC in May, "Godspell" at the Holiday Inn in June, and "Beauty and the Beast" at STAC in August. Call

Kudos to Local HS Actors Winning Big At State Competition
Congratulations to Pinelands Regional HS Senior Joe Wozniak, Junior Jessica Evans, and the entire Pinelands drama team and Coach for scoring big in the state's most prestigious theater arts competition -- the Speech and Theatre Association of NJ's annual Statewide Theatre Festival and Competition. Mr. Wozniak and Ms. Evans took home Best Actor and Best Actress awards, respectively, in what is considered to be the state's premier drama competition. Click here to read the SandPaper's full story from their 2/6 edition. If you missed these two actors and their drama team last week for Pineland's presentation of "Beauty and the Beast", you missed a lot. Ms. Evans was the perfect "Belle", with all the talent, optimism and beauty you expect from that character. And Mr. Wozniak was terrific too, playing Belle's zany yet loving father. The whole cast and crew did a wonderful job bringing this favorite musical to life.
These two talented people can also be seen in just about every production that Our Gang Player's community theater presents as well, and Ms. Evans also serves as choreographer for Our Gang Players. Congratulations, Joe & Jess! You make Southern Ocean County proud!!

"Just Say No" to the Barnegat Chamber of Commerce
The Barnegat Chamber of Commerce has finally come out and made a stand. They will be putting out signs to "Just Say No" to the proposed toll hikes on the Parkway. How brave of them. DowntownBarnegat.com fully supports the Chamber's efforts, as opposing the toll hike is a classic no-brainer. Now that the Barnegat Chamber has taken a public stand against injustice it is time to hold their stagnant Board of Directors accountable for their silence when it comes to other issues that effect the people and businesses of Barnegat. Resident Calls on Twp. Committee's "New Spirit of Cooperation" to Solve Cell Tower Problem
The following letter was sent by Jamie Griffin to our community.
Dear Neighbor, The next Zoning Board meeting concerning Cingular Wireless/AT&T's application for a cell tower on Old Lower Shore Rd. will be held on Tues, January 29th at 7:30 PM in the Municipal Building on West Bay Ave.
Since the meetings began in February 2007, Cingular has presented a stream of engineers who, naturally, contend that placing a 162' cell tower just 29 feet off the road at the entrance to a recreation area, in an otherwise beautiful and historic area of Barnegat is a great thing for our citizens. Well we disagree, and finally, at this meeting, we hope to be able to present our side! Click here to read her full letter.

Facts About The Post Office Move
The move of the retail portion of the Barnegat Post Office was reported as a done deal by the local press and Twp. representatives. It clearly is not. As the backpedaling begins, there are some important aspects of this decision that have not been discussed in any media outlet, although we have raised many of them over a year ago. These facts clearly show the short-sightedness and lack of thought by the Twp., postal authorities, and uninformed residents. Let's look at some facts. Click here to read the full story.
Money Doesn't Equal Votes
The people who read this website can -- and do -- make a difference
The Times-Beacon Jan. 3rd article "Novak outspent Ryan by almost $9K" shows that although J.J. Novak greatly outspent Dorothy Ryan, she still pulled off a stunning defeat of Novak this November. Ryan, with very little money and a lot of help from her 2 sons won the old fashioned way...she earned it. Hard work and the truth can sometimes beat money and misrepresentations. The one thing that this article left out was the impact that the thousands of visitors to this website had, during the months leading up to the election. We feel that you -- the readers of this site -- made a difference, and deserve recognition. Click here to read more.
Scandal and Coverup at Town Hall
Fred Rubenstein had the courage and strength of character to stand up for what is right. So what does the new Melchiondo-led Committee do as one of their first orders of business? They dump him. According to the Jan 1st Asbury Park Press, Mr. Rubenstein was removed from the Zoning Board and our new Deputy Mayor, Al Cirulli, said "We're trying to have people get along." This is ironic, since it is Cirulli's own anti-Gay bigotry that has divided his own party. The Asbury Park Press also said Committeeman Thomas Hartman is concerned that Rubenstein was preparing to run for office. This is also ironic since it is Hartman who will be running for office.

Barnegat Downtown Soon To Be Ghost Town?
Barnegat's Mayor can stop this from happening
The Post Office in the center of historic Downtown Barnegat is set to move its retail portion out of Downtown this Spring. Incredibly, it will continue to take up a huge chunk of valuable Downtown space as a distribution center only! This move could basically be the death of the Downtown area, as the Post Office consistently brought foot traffic to the Downtown area. Read DowntownBarnegat.com's original story regarding this by clicking here. DowntownBarnegat.com invited postal authorities and Twp. Committeepeople to address this serious subject over a year ago...none of them chose to respond to us...this clearly indicates they were not taking public concerns into account, and this matter needs to be looked at more carefully.

$9,000 Paycheck for Novak
Twp. Committee Hits Taxpayer Again
J.J. Novak will continue to take money from the Barnegat taxpayer even though the people rejected his bid for re-election as a Committeeman. Outragiously, the Twp. Committee tentatively approved a $9,000 job for the controversial Committeeman for when he is forced to leave office on January 1st. Political payback at the taxpayers' expense is nothing new, but this crosses the line because the job Novak will have is as Public Defender. Novak refused to uphold the law for every Barnegat resident while he was a Committeeman. How can he be expected to fairly defend EVERY citizen of Barnegat as Public Defender?

Twp. Spin on Public Outrage
Cirulli Doesn't "Want to Raise Taxes Any More"
Because of a devastating article about Twp. pay increases in Tuesday, Nov. 20th's Asbury Park Press (APP), another article appeared the next day -- Wed. Nov 21 -- with spin provided by Barnegat Mayor Al Cirulli. The APP story leaves out one important fact that should anger the now-awakened sleeping giant (the Barnegat taxpayer). Nowhere in the article does it state the fact that the Twp. tax went up 8.6 % . Click here for the full story.
Novak Goes Out With The Trash
Lame duck Committeeman J.J. Novak was thrown out by the voters, but before he goes he wants to spend more taxpayers' money. The Asbury Park Press (APP) reports that Novak wants to renegotiate the Waste Management contract NOW -- and spend more money to get the robo-cans back. Unfortunately for the people of Barnegat, Novak showed no courage and ran away from this issue when DowntownBarnegat.com presented it to him. The garbage issue was one of our 10 Quality of Life questions he was unable to answer when he ran for office back in 2006. Click here for the full story.
"Political Move" Pay Increases
Lame Duck Cirulli Council Stopped
After giving the people of Barnegat an 8.6 % tax increase this year, the outgoing Cirulli-led Committee tried to give eight Twp. officials large pay increases Monday night. Barnegat Honors Veterans

Township Committee Moves In Right Direction On Environment & Traffic
The Barnegat Twp. Committee has passed resolutions to create a Green Initiative Program and a Traffic Safety and Control Advisory Group. Barnegat Committee Sends Mixed Message About Vandalism
Vandalism of any kind to public or private property is unacceptable. This simple statement was not made by the Township last June when the base of our town clock was attacked, but now they are outraged by the current senseless vandalism in Barnegat. The playground originally known as Project Playground, and the Skate Park have been recently attacked. Not too long ago, the Chamber of Commerce signs coming into town were also vandalized. Mayor Cirulli, the rest of the Committee, the Chamber, and citizens are rightfully outraged by these recent acts of stupidity (most likely done by juveniles), but these same people were silent when someone (most likely an adult) tried to chisel out a family brick from the base of the town's symbol of pride. Hypocritical? Yes. Click here for the full story>>
Sonic To Come To...Waretown? Is Barnegat Losing It's Sense of Community?
Early last November the citizens of Barnegat were given the good news that we would soon be home to the first Sonic Restaurant in New Jersey. What happened? We don't know, township officials never told us. While it looks like the taxpayers of Barnegat won't benefit from this ratable, the good news is it's a short drive to Waretown when you crave a Sonic burger. Congratulations to Waretown. Sonic must have felt Waretown's new Town Center area would be a good location. Barnegat is not just losing good ratables, we are losing something much more important -- a sense of community. Taxes Skyrocket in Barnegat
$1.594 per $100 of Assessed Home Value instead of $1.29
It seems like Barnegat's recent re-evaluation will be used as a smokescreen to raise everyone's taxes in Barnegat Township this year. As reported in The BarnegatPress several months ago, it is explained that the tax rate should be set at $1.29 per $100 of Assessed Home Value and anything higher would be a tax increase. To read The Barnegat Press' explanation Click here, and scroll down to "How $ 1.40 equals an extra 3 Million dollars to Barnegat Budgets!". Early in the year, Committeeman Hartman set us up for an increase to $1.40 per $100, but the Township Committee shocked everyone with an inflated $1.594 hit to the taxpayer. Reagan Out
The Voice of the People Heard
Wednesday night the Barnegat Board of Education voted against naming the new elementary school after former President Reagan and instead will name it after Dr. Joseph T. Donahue, who has served 31 years in the distict. DowntownBarnegat.com has from the beginning objected to the naming of this new school after Reagan in preference for a more local figure, someone who actually had a connection with our town, such as late Historian Fred Watts. The Township can honor Mr. Watts in other ways and we believe Dr. Donahue is more than deserving due to his personal connection to the district. We thank everyone who participated in our related "Poll of the People" question who overwhelmingly supported what ultimately became the School Board's decision. Good job everyone.
Happy Heritage Day, Barnegat!
On this Heritage Day we believe it is fitting to honor the original intent and commitment of volunteers, citizens and yes -- even township officials -- regarding the town clock and Heritage Day...and to remind the community of the unethical decision made by the Twp. Committee last year to turn their backs on the community. They made a committment when they accepted the gift of the clock from the citizens to the township. Part of that committment was for the township to support Heritage Day and to maintain the clock...they have done neither. Click here for more >>
Time For Putting Bad Politics Aside
Barnegat Mayor Asked To Sign Environmental Agreement
Resident Marianne Clemente has asked Barnegat's Mayor Al Cirulli to sign an agreement for Barnegat to commit to reducing greenhouse gases. As DowntownBarnegat.com outlined in our story "NJ Mayors Lead The Way Protecting Our Environment And Our Pocketbook" posted Feb 18th, this should be an easy moral decision for our mayor to make. Not only would he be protecting our precious environment but in the long run it would be the smart economic thing to do for the people of Barnegat. Another no-brainer...well not so fast. New Sidewalk Set For West Bay
Mayor Takes Positive News For An Opportunity To Attack Taxpayers
Barnegat officials take a big step forward by authorizing a $98,000 project to reconstruct curbs and sidewalks on the South side of West Bay Ave from Memorial Drive to Maple Ave. In what can be even better news for Barnegat, fair and credible reporting in the local press featured the conditions of our sidewalks and roads and can be seen in Heather Pharo's April 24th article in the Atlantic City Press. This type of reporting -- which is not a public-relations piece, but solid journalism -- features pictures of the conditions we all face along with questions to those in power. This type of professional journalism is what can make a real difference for us all. Click here for full story and a link to Ms. Pharo's article.
Township Considers Fixing Sidewalk
Could Be A Positive Move For Barnegat
In what can be seen as a positive move in the right direction, Township Administrator David Breeden announced that the Twp. is looking into repairing some sidewalks downtown. They are considering installing new sidewalks on the South side of West Bay Ave., from Memorial Drive to the Post Office. It is obvious that this is needed and if this improvement is completed quickly, our Twp. and all of our Committee members deserve full credit. Click here for more >>
A Real Plan Is Needed For Downtown
Talk Of Streetscape Project Used To Hide Lack Of Improvements?
Only a week after a series of excellent articles in our local newspaper pointed out Barnegat Township's lack of recreational resources, the same newspaper is used as a public relations outlet to announce a possible streetscape project. This is the same streetscape project that many residents have been hearing about year after year. We all hope that the Township finaly receives funds for a streetscape, but let's also hope that the public can see the difference between public relations spin, and REAL progress, accountability and truth.
DowntownBarnegat.com posted a REAL economic development plan for Barnegat back in January of 2007, and it can still be found on this home page. If we knew that a streetscape project would be used as a way to hide the lack of any downtown improvements months ago, how could our local media continue to ignore the real problems that we face every day in Barnegat.

We all want one thing...and that is for Barnegat to become what it should -- a great place to live. When our town leaders fail to deliver what they promise, we cannot stick our heads in the sand. We have to have the courage to say something about it to improve our quality of life.
David P. Biggy's column in the March 22nd edition of the Times Beacon entitled "Barnegat's Officials Should Pay Attention" was a refreshing dose of truth and common sense. Click here to read more.

Barnegat Mayor makes disturbing statements about Heritage Day
EDITOR's NOTE: This article is vital to the integrity of our town's leadership. It should not -- and will not -- leave this front page until Mayor Hartman addresses these serious issues contained in it. We will publish a complete timeline and history of what our Township Committee and Chamber of Commerce leadership did regarding their attempts to kill Heritage Day. This is something that will not go away until our leaders address it. This is our pledge to the many supporters and volunteers who made this great day possible.
Originally posted May 13 - BARNEGAT, NJ Barnegat Mayor Thomas Hartman made his position clear on why Barnegat Township did not support the 4th annual Heritage Day this year. His comments were very telling and sadly disturbing.
The April edition of the Barnegat Leader stated "Mayor Thomas Hartman noted that Heritage Day is not a township-sponsored activity, and instead proposed that the day be combined with a township-backed Community Day which is scheduled on June 10." Reading this was the first time we ever heard these comments, and they are shocking.

Melchiondo's Barnegat
Barnegat is made up of a lot of great people. People with pride, people with talent. Caring people, giving people. People with courage to speak their minds, and people who work hard to make our town better. It is really PEOPLE that make Barnegat what it is. Sadly, as we have seen in the past few years it takes only a few people, in this case the current leadership of the Barnegat Twp. Committee, to bring us all down.
I must make it very clear that I myself was a supporter of our current Mayor Jeff Melchiondo. I deeply regret that now. I was wrong to trust him. I was wrong to put my faith in him. And I was definitely wrong to ever vote for him.
Under Melchiondo, Barnegat has become not a better place to live, but a place many of us want to leave. Melchiondo's Barnegat has become an ugly place where civil discourse is met with attacks on citizens. Issues are not discussed openly and honestly as our quality of life slowly erodes as each day goes by.
As someone who once supported Melchiondo, why am I now so outspoken about his performance as a public official? Because I feel we deserve a better Barnegat, and I -- probably just like you -- don't like Melchiondo's Barnegat.
In Melchiondo's Barnegat, Twp. taxes go up every year. During a global economic crisis where many of us are desperately trying to survive, the Twp. tax keeps going up and up.
In Melchiondo's Barnegat, he can say "IF YOU TRUST US WITH YOUR VOTE WE PROMISE TO KEEP TAXES STABLE." When he is then given the honor to serve on our Committee, he breaks that solemn promise every year in office.
In Melchiondo's Barnegat, information is kept from the public. One example of many is that the budget is not passed until after the November election. The actual tax hike figures are NEVER accurately presented to the public before they get their bill.
In Melchiondo's Barnegat, people are ugly. Look at the posts on the Asbury Park Press and Atlantic City Press web sites. Citizens are attacked for standing up for themselves, or for simply speaking their minds, while Barnegat is referred to -- over and over again -- as "Barneghetto".
In Melchiondo's Barnegat, the people must force the leadership of the Twp. Committee to vote in our best interest. Hundreds -- if not thousands -- of people must storm Town Hall and THEN Melchiondo and Cirulli will change their minds. THEN they will be for FOR us, after they were AGAINST us.
In Melchiondo's Barnegat, we are not considered the "Best Place To Live" anymore. With high taxes, crime, drugs, over-development and a crumbling infrastructure...the truth is they are right.
In Melchiondo's Barnegat, the downtown area has deteriorated and become an embarrassment to Barnegat. As many proud people have invested much time and money to improve our historic heritage, Melchiondo has stood by weakly and did nothing as the downtown turns into a ghost town.
Finally, In Melchiondo's Barnegat town pride is a thing of the past. Many may ask what do we have to be proud of? Simply look around you. Melchiondo's Barnegat is nothing to be proud of.
There is hope. Please remember after all, this is NOT Melchiondo's Barnegat...this is our Barnegat and we can make it better. With better leadership...with accountable leadership...with open and honest leadership...WE CAN DO IT.
Michael Harrington
